Part One – Kings in the Wings
In 1 Kings 1, David instructed Nathan that Solomon should be taken on his mule down to Gihon and be anointed there. Why did he choose this location for the anointing of his son? The Gihon spring was at the site of David’s tabernacle. It was an inexhaustible spring of fresh water, the only one in Jerusalem. This is very important because Jerusalem represents the Church as a whole. There is only one place where the Church can obtain living water. In this large city there were many receptacles containing water, but David insisted that his son be anointed at the only place where there was an unending source of fresh pure water – Gihon. Jesus said that those who come to Him will never thirst again because He is our Gihon – He is our inexhaustible source of living water. The Solomon Company, who are preparing to arise and rule, must first be found at the River of Living Water flowing from under the throne of His presence. This is a place of intimacy where the thirsty can come and be satisfied. It is not enough to drink from the cisterns of others who have gathered water for themselves. Those appointed to rule must drink for themselves from the revelation of Christ.
It is at Gihon that anointing is received. It is at Gihon that the shofar is blown over us and Zadok and Nathan equip us for reigning. Gihon means ‘to gush forth (as water), generally to issue: – break forth, labor to bring forth, come forth, draw up, take out.’ Paul spoke of laboring until Christ is formed in his disciples. It is at Gihon, in the presence of Christ, that He is formed and brought forth in us. We cannot ascend to a place of ruling unless Christ is formed and manifested in our daily walk. It is Adonijah who talks the talk without walking the walk but Solomon is different. Of Solomon, God said:
2Sa 7:14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son.
This Solomon Company are the sons of God, walking in the character and authority of Christ. Solomon had been appointed by God as the next king BUT he still needed to be ANOINTED by God as the next king before he could begin to exercise rule. Those who have been prepared in secret and who know that a time of ruling is ordained for them, have probably been much like this young Solomon. Wandering through the halls of the palace, he must have dreamt of the day he would be king and played games where he issued orders and watched his imaginary servants scurrying to carry them out. (Picture the cub in ‘the Lion King’ singing, “I just can’t wait to be king”!) However, it was not until the time of being anointed by Zadok that Solomon operated in any kind of effective authority. The throne of the kingdom was not his to sit on until his appointment at Gihon had taken place.
This is why this scenario taking place at Gihon is so significant for the Church today. (when I refer to the Church I mean the Body of Christ, whether they meet formally or informally. God knows who are His).
We, as the Church, have declared our legal right to rule. We have announced through many a sermon and article the parameters and influence of this ruling reigning Church but we have yet to see it manifested in any significant measure in the earth. Sickness and bondage and corruption still wreak havoc both within and without the Church. I believe that much of the preparation has been done within the walls of the palace to equip us to move into the next chapter of God’s calendar but He has His finger on the pause button and is keeping His beloved sons at the spring Gihon because this is the most important and crucial step of the process and He is not going to hurry it. The horn of anointing oil must be completely emptied before the declaration ‘God save King Solomon!’ can be made. Something important is happening in the anointing of Solomon. This is the bridging point between preparation to rule (as in the book of Proverbs, the receiving of teaching and wisdom) and ascension to rule. All who are to be a part of what God is doing in the emerging church must traverse this bridge before being seated and released to rule and build.
The Pouring of the Oil
It is very significant that Zadok was chosen to pour the horn of oil upon Solomon. In Ezekiel 44, we read that the sons of Zadok were found faithful when many priests went astray after idols. Therefore God appointed them a permanent place to dwell before Him and they would minister to the Lord. They also had responsibility concerning the people:
Eze 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean. Eze 44:24 And in controversy they shall stand in judgment; and they shall judge it according to my judgments
So when Zadok pours the oil of kingly anointing upon Solomon, it is a picture of a faithful remnant releasing the oil of revelation upon the company of kings-in-waiting. This revelation will teach people the difference between what is clean and what is unclean, between what is set-apart for God and what is only worthy to be cast aside. This anointing oil is poured upon the HEAD of Solomon. In other words, it is applied to his understanding. Here we see depicted the release of teaching and revelation that will bring separation in the understanding of the Church between what is clean (of the Spirit) and what is unclean (soulish). The Church will be undergoing a renewing of her corporate mind. Much of what we have absorbed as doctrine of truth is, in fact, doctrine of man or demons. All the idols in Church thinking which have kept the Church powerless are going to be exposed for what they are. The judgments of God are going to be released in the Church wherever there is controversy over what is Truth. There will be a separating of wheat (holy) from chaff (profane) and the wind of the Spirit will blow the chaff away so that true wheat which can provide bread of Life will be present in the Church of Jesus Christ.
This application of the oil of revelation and understanding will not take only a week. This is not a quick fix. This is the application of Truth necessary to equip the Church to rule and reign in righteousness and justice. The name ‘Zadok’ means ‘just’ and comes from a root word meaning ‘to cleanse, to turn to righteousness’. So we see that the very character of the vessels used to pour this oil brings about a separation between light and darkness, and an establishment of the foundations of God’s throne within. This is important because we cannot rule external situations unless the foundations of God’s throne are found within our hearts. The throne of the Kingdom must be established within before we can be used to effectively extend the rule of the Kingdom of God in the earth!
So Solomon must remain at this place until the whole horn of oil is poured out upon him. The Holy Spirit showed me a glimpse of this taking place. This was not a quick dab of oil on the forehead.
As I watched, the oil ran down his head and over his face and ears and then dripped down onto his garment until he was saturated with oil. It went over his eyelids and into his eyes, removing logs and splinters, changing the way he saw things. It went into his ears, cleansing and anointing his hearing so that the voice of the stranger was clearly discernable from the voice of the Shepherd. It covered his lips and the whole character of the words he spoke was transformed. It caused his face to change and shine with the glory of God
Ecc 8:1 Who is as the wise? And who knows the meaning of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
The oil saturated the shoulders of his garment. The garment represents a calling or gifting, a ministry which we walk in. This garment became saturated with the anointing of wisdom and understanding, so much so that it appeared a different color, richer. The oil affected the garment permanently. There is only one place in the Word where the word translated ‘anoint’ means an overflowing anointing. This is in Psalm 92:
Psa 92:10 But You shall lift up my horn as the wild ox; and I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
There is an anointing of fresh oil presently being released upon the Church. It is an anointing to bring order and separation, to conform the Church to the Word; to release wisdom and understanding to walk in during the next season. The face of the Church will change and begin to shine with the glory of God. In Proverbs we hear the voice of Wisdom:
Pro 8:14 Counsel and sound wisdom are mine; I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign and princes decree justice. Princes rule by me, and nobles, all the judges of the earth.
This anointing from the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation is released by those who have sat under the teaching of this Spirit themselves, in the secret place. They release that which has become flesh in them and equip the kings-in-waiting with the foundations they need to release Christ’s Kingdom rule in the earth.
We said before that God had announced of Solomon, ‘he shall be My son, and I will be his Father’. So the ascent of Solomon to the throne is a depiction of the manifestation or unveiling of the sons of God. We would do well to look deeply into it to gain understanding of the times we are in and to know what to do. All of creation is groaning, waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God; waiting for Solomon to ascend and take his place on the throne of the kingdom. To do this, he has to come up to a higher place spiritually. He has to ascend in his understanding and begin to view things from a throne perspective. He has to put away childish thinking and begin to think like a mature man. This process involves repentance. To ‘repent’ means ‘to think differently’. The only route to thinking differently is via the road of revelation and by drinking in fresh understanding. We need this Zadok oil to enter the eyes and ears of our hearts because we haven’t being seeing or hearing everything clearly. Some things in the Church we think are clean, but they will be exposed as unclean and then we need to cast them from our midst like filthy bloodstained cloths that we may be a HOLY people, WHOLLY separated unto Him Who sits upon the Throne.
Let us look at what took place as Solomon was declared King:
1Ki 1:40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
The sound that is released into the spiritual realm upon this declaration ‘God save the king’ causes the earth to split open, as the sons of God burst forth from the earthen womb of preparation in holy array and take their places of rule all over the earth.
So, receive the oil from the hand of Zadok, Church of God. Allow it to soak and cover and penetrate every opening in your place of understanding. Be aware of the Spirit of discernment that is being released and conform your thinking to the plumb-line of Truth. Embrace what is holy and what is clean. Pull down every thought that exalts itself above the true knowledge of God; pull down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ. In humility and the fear of God, cast from your storehouse of doctrine everything that is revealed to be profane or unclean. There must be true meat found in the House of Wisdom in the coming days and your Father, Who knows that a usurper is loudly and openly declaring himself king, has declared that the Man of Rest must be anointed without delay and ascend to take the throne.
